Wrapped in Care: How ALS United Rocky Mountain’s Quilt Program Is Bringing Comfort to ALS Families

How Our Quilt Program Is Bringing Comfort to ALS Families

At ALS United Rocky Mountain, one of the most meaningful ways we welcome new families into our community is through our heartfelt Quilt Program. When someone registers with us, we send them a beautiful, handmade quilt — a tangible reminder that they are not alone and that a community of caring people is wrapping them in love and support during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Each quilt is more than just fabric and thread; it carries a message of compassion, hope, and solidarity. The responses we’ve received from families demonstrate just how powerful that can be.

One family recently shared:

“When the box arrived, no one had the vaguest idea of its contents. When it was opened, I started to cry…I immediately knew that it was a gift made with love and caring. In the past, I’ve made quilts for hospitalized children and never envisioned a member of my family being a quilt recipient. We are all so thankful for the support and care represented by this lovely quilt.”

Another caregiver wrote:

“The beautiful quilt you sent is in daily use. Thank you so very much!”

And a third family told us:

“Just wanted to thank you for all you do…what an amazing organization and people. We are getting Harry’s wheelchair and transfer disk this week. And the quilt — what a morale boost!!! It has material patterns depicting ‘The Grateful Dead’ and ‘AC/DC’…sure made him smile!! Still working on getting into the pain clinic…eternal insurance battle. The medication Dr. Foster prescribed for cramps seems to be very effective and we’re so grateful for that. We were wondering if there is any help for wheelchair ramps? Unfortunately, our house is two-storied and we foresee some issues getting him out of the house. Thank you again for your obvious care and devotion to helping others!”

These messages capture exactly why the Quilt Program exists. While a quilt may seem like a simple gift, it’s often a much-needed morale boost, a moment of joy, and a reminder that even in difficult times, there’s a community standing beside you.

Our mission is to provide a quilt to every person diagnosed with ALS who registers with us. It’s one of many ways we aim to surround ALS families with compassion, encouragement, and practical support as they navigate the complexities of this disease.
