Registration is Open for Joe’s Camp 2026, May 1-3.
At ALS United Rocky Mountain, we are proud to share a meaningful connection with Joe’s Camp, a program that provides youth impacted by ALS with resources, connection, and a much-needed outlet for joy and understanding. ALS affects the entire family, including children who often carry emotions and questions that can feel isolating. Joe’s Camp creates a space where those children can feel seen, supported, and understood.
From May 1–3, 2026, children ages 8–13 whose families have been touched by ALS will gather at Camp Cherokee in Kings Mountain State Park, South Carolina, for a free overnight camp designed just for them.
Joe’s Camp is about more than a weekend away. It is about giving kids permission to simply be kids. Surrounded by nature, campers will cross rope bridges, explore the outdoors, share campfire moments, and build friendships with others who truly understand what it means to live in a family affected by ALS. In a safe and supportive environment, they are encouraged to talk about ALS in age-appropriate ways while also stepping into adventure, laughter, and new experiences.
The weekend is completely free for families. Lodging, meals, and activities are all provided thanks to the generosity of dedicated supporters and sponsors who believe in caring for the whole family.

While children are immersed in camp activities, caregivers are not forgotten. Joe’s Camp also offers a special Parents’ Day program that addresses topics like “Parenting Through ALS” and provides practical caregiving training. It is an opportunity for parents, grandparents, and caregivers to connect, learn, and receive encouragement from others navigating similar journeys.
Safety and leadership are central to the camp experience. Joe’s Camp is led by Camp Director Lizz Updegraff, along with volunteer counselors, a camp nurse, and experienced staff. All volunteers and leadership undergo interviews, reference checks, and background screenings to ensure a safe, welcoming environment for every camper. Volunteers who have a personal connection to ALS are especially encouraged to participate, helping foster a compassionate and understanding community.
Families are responsible for transportation to and from camp, though scholarships are available to help offset travel costs when needed. A detailed packing list will be provided closer to camp so families can prepare with confidence.
Joe’s Camp is made possible through generous sponsorships. Donors who support the program help ensure that children living in families affected by ALS have access to connection, support, and moments of joy.
ALS impacts more than one individual…it impacts entire families. Programs like Joe’s Camp remind children that they are not alone, that their feelings matter, and that even in the face of uncertainty, there is room for friendship, adventure, and hope.
If your family has been touched by ALS and you have a child between the ages of 8–13, we encourage you to register today. Space is limited, and this life-changing weekend fills quickly.
For out-of-state campers, there are travel sponsorships available please contact help@joemartinalsfoundation.org.
For questions, travel scholarship requests, or more information, families can contact Camp Director Lizz Updegraff at lizz@joemartinalsfoundation.org or call The Joe Martin ALS Foundation at (704) 332-1929.
For older youth, Joe’s Camp & Hike in the fall offers a separate teen program for ages 14–17. This free weekend hiking experience gives teens the chance to challenge themselves outdoors, form meaningful peer connections, and openly discuss ALS in a space designed just for them. More information for teen program will come later this year.
Together, we continue building community, strengthening families, and ensuring that no one, especially our youngest caregivers, walks this journey alone.
